Is Claude available in Australia? The 2026 answer

Claude works in Australia today, on every plan, with nothing switched off for a local sign-up. Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise all function exactly as they do from a US address, because Anthropic's own supported-countries list names Australia individually rather than folding it into a vague rest-of-world category¹. That naming matters, because Australia is not a marginal market for Claude. Anthropic's own research ranks the country seventh in the world for Claude use per person, with a usage index of 4.1². That score means Australians use Claude more than four times what the size of the working-age population alone would predict. This guide answers the practical version of the availability question: what actually works once you sign up, and what it costs in Australian dollars. It also covers where the data can live, and the one part of the setup that is still genuinely clunky.

Is Claude available in Australia?

The short answer is yes, without an asterisk on the product itself. Claude.ai, the desktop and mobile apps, the API and every current plan work the same way from an Australian sign-up as they do from a US one. Anthropic treats Australia as a named, supported market rather than an edge case¹. That is a genuine allow-list, not a default-open policy, and Anthropic's supported-countries page lists each approved country one by one. Australia sits there next to New Zealand, the United Kingdom and most of the European Union.

None of that coverage is new or provisional. Anthropic announced a Sydney office on 10 March 2026, its fourth in Asia-Pacific alongside Tokyo, Bengaluru and Seoul, and named Commonwealth Bank, Canva and Quantium among the local customers already running Claude in production³. A bank with strict compliance requirements does not put an AI tool into daily use on a whim. That customer list answers the "is this serious enough" question before you need to ask it yourself.

What actually works from an Australian sign-up

Coverage is not partial, and none of the core tools carry a region lock, because everything Anthropic ships lands in Australia the same week it lands anywhere else:

• Claude.ai with chat, Projects and shared workspaces
• Claude Code, the terminal agent for developers, on every plan from Pro upward
• Claude Cowork, the desktop agent mode that works through a folder of files on its own
• Claude in Chrome, running inside the browser tools your team already has open
• The API, for teams building integrations or automated workflows on top of the model family

Nothing on that list needs a workaround, a VPN or a US-based colleague signing up on your behalf. When a feature ships to claude.ai worldwide, it ships to an Australian account at the same time. That happens because Anthropic runs one product surface, not a cut-down regional build held back for later.

How much does Claude cost in Australian dollars?

Every country gets billed from the same US dollar table, so there is no separate Australian price list⁴. Pro costs US$20 a month, close to A$30 at 2026 exchange rates, and drops to US$17 a month if you commit to a year up front. A Team seat starts at US$20 per user per month billed annually, also about A$30, with a minimum of just two seats now that Anthropic dropped the old five-seat floor. Enterprise runs US$20 per seat plus usage billed at API rates, available self-serve from 20 seats or sales-assisted from 50 seats with invoicing built in⁵.

Add ten per cent to every figure above, because Anthropic charges GST, meaning the consumption tax applied to digital services imported into Australia, by default once your card carries an Australian billing address⁶. A business registered for GST can remove it by entering an ABN, meaning the Australian Business Number that identifies a registered enterprise, under Settings then Billing. The exemption applies only to invoices from that point forward, under Australia's reverse-charge rule for imported digital services⁷. Enter it in month one and GST never appears on an invoice. Add it in month four instead, and three invoices already carry the ten per cent.

Can Claude data stay in Australia?

For API traffic, yes, through Amazon Bedrock, meaning AWS's own platform for running foundation models, in the Sydney region known as ap-southeast-2⁸. Route a workload through Bedrock Sydney and inference happens inside an Australian data centre instead of crossing the Pacific. That is the detail that matters most under the cross-border disclosure rule in Australian Privacy Principle 8.

The claude.ai apps sit outside that picture. Chat, Projects and Cowork still process conversations on Anthropic's own infrastructure overseas, so onshore hosting is something you choose deliberately at the API level, not a setting inside a normal claude.ai account. One caveat is worth knowing before a compliance answer leans on it: not every model earns an Australia-linked routing profile the day it launches. AWS ties some inference profiles to a single geography and leaves others in one global pool spanning every commercial region. The one thing that's still awkward

Billing is the part that has not caught up. Buy Claude directly from Anthropic and the charge lands in US dollars on a company card, with no Australian entity for a purchase order and no local invoice for the books. For one person, that barely registers. A finance team running a real procurement process feels it differently: the friction stalls a rollout for weeks over one currency line.
