Why did Anthropic open a Sydney office?

Anthropic announced its Sydney office on 10 March 2026, with the doors open by late April and Theo Hourmouzis as General Manager for Australia and New Zealand³.

Three weeks later, on 31 March 2026, Anthropic signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Government, the first agreement of its kind under the National AI Plan⁴. The MOU covers collaboration with Australia's AI Safety Institute, plus A$3 million in API credits for researchers at the Australian National University, the Murdoch Children's Research Institute, the Garvan Institute and Curtin University.
