Everyone wants to know what Claude costs, and the answer is a bit like asking what a car costs. It depends entirely on what you need.

A solo consultant writing proposals and analysing documents needs something completely different from a fifty-person company rolling Claude out across the whole organisation. The prices vary a lot, and there are a few traps along the way worth knowing about.

So here's the guide to Claude pricing Australia has been missing: every plan, what it costs, and what you genuinely get for the money.

One housekeeping note first. Anthropic bills in US dollars and its list prices don't include tax, so count on GST and the day's exchange rate on top. The A$ figures below are rough conversions at about 1.5, there to give you a feel, not to appear on your invoice.

What is Claude AI, actually?

The quick version, for anyone who landed here via the price list without quite knowing what they're comparing. Claude is a conversational AI built by Anthropic, an American company founded by former OpenAI researchers. You talk to Claude in text, and it reads, writes, summarises, codes and reasons, with a tone many people find more grown-up and less waffly than ChatGPT, though that's a matter of taste.

Australia has taken to it with some enthusiasm. The country sits in the global top tier for Claude usage per capita, and Anthropic opened its Sydney office in 2026. So if it feels like everyone around you suddenly has an opinion about Claude, that's not your imagination.

In businesses, Claude mostly gets used for three things: writing and summarising, ploughing through long documents, and supporting teams with everyday tasks, from proposals to customer support. The Cowork mode lets Claude work with your own files directly, which we'll get to below.

What does Claude pricing look like in Australia?

Anthropic offers four subscription tiers plus an enterprise option¹.

Claude Free: US$0

Free access to Claude Sonnet, but with limited messages per day. Good for a test drive. Not enough for daily professional use. You'll notice the ceiling pretty quickly.

Claude Pro: US$20 a month (about A$30)

This is the standard choice for the serious professional user. You pay US$20 a month, or US$17 a month if you commit to a year up front¹, and you get:

• Roughly 5 times more usage than the free plan
• Access to all of Claude's models, including the latest
• Priority in the queue when servers are busy
• Claude Cowork: Claude works directly with the files on your computer, runs tasks and delivers finished results
• Projects, for gathering context, files and instructions in a workspace Claude remembers between sessions

Pro is where most sole traders and freelancers should start.

Claude Max: US$100 or US$200 a month

Max 5x costs US$100 a month (about A$150) and Max 20x costs US$200 (about A$300). That's a lot, but if you work with Claude every day and constantly hit the ceiling on Pro, Max feels noticeably different. No interruptions, no limits nagging at you.

Most people don't need Max. The ones who do already know it.

Claude Teams: from US$20 per user per month

Teams is the natural step when there's more than one of you². Anthropic officially calls it the Team plan, and it now starts at just two seats and scales to 150. It used to require five, so if that number scared you off before, it's gone.

• US$25 per user per month billed month-to-month (about A$38)
• SSO and domain capture included
• Centralised billing, one invoice
• Admin console with role-based permissions and spend controls
• Premium seats with Claude Code included: US$100 per user per month billed annually (about A$150)

Something special happens with Teams. You share Projects and workspaces, and you can build common instructions that turn Claude into a team tool rather than an individual one. Claude Enterprise: US$20 a seat plus usage, or a quote

For organisations with particular needs around security, dedicated support, custom deployment and advanced administration. (SSO is already in Teams.) Enterprise comes in two flavours: self-serve at US$20 per seat per month plus usage billed at API rates on top, and sales-assisted where dedicated support and custom deployment are added and the price is negotiated directly with Anthropic. What does Claude Pro cost in Australia?

The short answer for the most common question we get: Claude Pro costs US$20 a month, which lands around A$30 at 2026 exchange rates, and Anthropic adds 10% GST on top unless you enter an ABN under Settings then Billing. In practice an Australian card statement shows roughly A$33 a month with GST included, moving a dollar or two with the currency. Commit to a year up front and the rate drops to US$17 a month, about A$26 before GST. That is the whole bill.

There is no separate Australian price list. Anthropic bills every country in US dollars from the same table, so the AUD figures quoted anywhere, including here, are conversions rather than fixed local prices. Budget on the US dollar number and treat the rest as exchange-rate weather.

What does Claude Cowork cost?

Cowork is included from Pro upwards. No separate licence fee.

Cowork is Claude's agent mode on the desktop. You point Claude at a folder, give it a task, and Claude works independently: reads files, writes documents, analyses data and delivers finished results straight into your folder. Think of it as a digital colleague who actually does the work, not just answers questions about it.

So if you're wondering what Claude Cowork costs, the answer is: nothing extra on top of your Pro or Teams plan.

How does Claude compare with ChatGPT on price?

It's impossible to talk about Claude pricing without mentioning the competition, and honestly, the price picture is surprisingly similar when you line Claude (Anthropic) up against ChatGPT (OpenAI) at comparable levels³.

Microsoft's Copilot undercuts both on sticker price, but only really makes sense if your whole world already lives inside Microsoft 365.

The prices are nearly identical at individual level. So the choice isn't about price, it's about what you actually do with the tool.

Does Claude charge GST in Australia?

GST lands on your Claude invoice by default, because Anthropic sells imported digital services into Australia and the tax follows the billing address you gave at signup. An Australian business registered for GST can have that ten per cent removed by entering an ABN under Settings then Billing⁴. The field sits behind the Update button next to your payment method.

The ATO rule underneath decides whether that ten per cent is a real cost or just a bookkeeping step, which is why it is worth two minutes of your attention. Offshore suppliers do not charge GST on sales to Australian businesses that give an ABN and confirm they are registered, and the business then accounts for the tax itself in its BAS⁵. A sole trader who is not registered pays the ten per cent and keeps it.

Timing matters more than most people expect, because Anthropic applies billing changes forward only and says completed invoices cannot be updated retroactively⁴. Enter the ABN before the first invoice runs and the exemption holds from that cycle on, while an ABN added in month four leaves three invoices carrying GST. We watched a client do exactly that, and the three invoices were still unresolved a month later.

Claude costs nothing if you're curious and want to test it. It costs about A$30 a month if you work with it seriously as an individual, and from about A$30 per person per month if you're a team, with the entry bar now at just two seats.

That's roughly what a couple of smashed avo breakfasts cost.
