Claude in Excel and Microsoft 365: What Actually Works

There's a moment that keeps repeating in Australian offices right now.
Someone in finance is staring at a spreadsheet. Three tabs, forty columns, a number at the bottom that doesn't match the number the board saw last week. And instead of opening a browser tab, copying a chunk of data into a chat window, and pasting the answer back, they just click an icon in the ribbon and ask.
That's Claude in Excel. It's an add-in that sits in a sidebar inside the spreadsheet itself, and it's generally available on paid Claude plans for Excel, Word and PowerPoint, with Outlook in public beta1. No copy-paste ferry service between apps. No new browser tab. Claude reads what you're looking at.
And the bit that actually changes how people work isn't any single app. It's that the conversation follows you between them.
What is Claude in Excel and Microsoft 365?
Here's the current state of play, plainly:
- Excel: generally available. Windows and macOS, all paid plans.
- Word: generally available. Same plans.
- PowerPoint: generally available. Same plans.
- Outlook: public beta. Works well, expect the odd rough edge.
All of it is included in a paid Claude plan. There's no separate Microsoft 365 licence to buy from Anthropic, no add-on SKU, no procurement round. If your people already have Claude on a paid plan, this is a fifteen-minute job, not a project.
The thing worth underlining, straight from Anthropic's product page: context carries from Outlook to Word to Excel to PowerPoint, and changing one thing lets every open file catch up2. Which in practice means you stop switching tools and just keep talking. Independent coverage of the rollout made the same point: Claude can reference emails alongside spreadsheets, presentations and documents in a single thread3.
That's where the value is. Not the individual tricks.
Claude in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
Claude in Excel
For most people Excel is both the most-used and least-understood app on the machine. Half the office googles VLOOKUP every single week. That's twenty minutes a day, quietly, forever.
Claude sits in the sidebar. You highlight a range, ask in plain English, and Claude builds the formula, drafts the pivot, or just explains what you're actually looking at. Real examples from real Australian teams:
- "Summarise the last three months of sales by state and tell me what looks unusual"
- "Work out gross margin per product and flag anything under 20 per cent"
- "Explain why the total in tab 2 doesn't match tab 3"
For a finance team of four to eight people, this is one of very few AI use cases that saves money immediately. Not in a pilot next quarter. Tomorrow.
Claude for Word
Most value for businesses that write a lot. Proposals, contracts, meeting notes, reports, SOPs. All the stuff that currently takes two hours to tidy up after someone brainstormed into a blank page.
Claude for Word reads the whole document, compares it against your house template, suggests changes as tracked changes, and keeps writing in the same voice3. It isn't replacing your writer. It's getting you to a first draft you can then sharpen. The difference is going from blank page and a sinking feeling, to half the job done and a clear direction, in about five minutes.
Concretely: proposals that follow your template, contract drafts with standard clauses filled in, or five pages of chaotic workshop notes turned into a one-page set of decisions and owners.
Claude for PowerPoint
This is the one that surprises people.
Give it three bullet points and a deadline. Tell the sidebar: "Build an eight-slide deck on why Q1 revenue lifted 12 per cent, based on the Word doc I had open an hour ago. Keep our template."
And it works. Not perfectly, but close enough that a marketing manager with no design resource gets a presentable deck in fifteen minutes instead of two hours. For a business currently outsourcing slide decks to an agency, that's a line item you can just stop paying.
Claude for Outlook
Outlook is still beta. Say that out loud to your team before you switch it on.
But what works, works well. A morning inbox triage ("what actually matters today"). Draft replies in your tone. And, most importantly, the context follows you when you jump to Word to write the proposal that the email was about.
Want to try it? Good. Just don't let the whole company run beta Outlook as their primary tool yet. Pilot it with finance and sales, gather the feedback, and let everyone else wait for GA.
How do you switch on Claude in Excel across a team?
It isn't complicated:
- Admin approval. Your IT admin approves the Claude add-ins through Microsoft AppSource and the Microsoft 365 admin centre. One approval per app.
- User sign-in. Each person opens Excel, clicks the Claude icon in the ribbon, and signs in with their Claude account.
- Done. Sidebar appears, conversation starts.
One tip from us: pilot with five to ten people for two weeks before you go wide. Pick different roles, finance, sales, ops, and gather what actually worked in your context. Then roll out broadly with use cases you've already proven, rather than a list of features nobody asked for.
That sequencing is the whole game, and it's the same order we use in a full Claude implementation: choose the platform, explore it properly, train on real tasks, then automate. Not the other way round.
A practical note before you go wide: check everyone is on a current Microsoft 365 build. Older installs simply won't show the add-in, and you'll spend a morning debugging something that was never broken.
What does it cost for an Australian business?
The honest answer is that you're not buying the add-ins. You're buying Claude.
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard: you almost certainly have this already.
- Claude Team Standard: US$20 per user per month billed annually, about A$30, or US$25 month to month. Minimum two seats, and that includes the admin console and SSO.
- Claude Pro: US$20 per month for individuals, US$17 on annual billing.
- The Microsoft 365 add-ins: A$0. Included in the plan you already pay for.
So for a 25-person business already on Microsoft 365, the incremental cost of putting AI inside Excel is just the Claude licences. Nothing else.
If you'd rather not deal with USD invoices and exchange-rate drift every month, satori-claude sits on top: A$42 per user per month for a Standard licence, A$15 per user per month management, one-time A$850 setup, all invoiced in Australian dollars. Full breakdowns are in our Claude pricing guide and the Claude Teams pricing guide.
A quick word on Microsoft Copilot, since everyone asks: plenty of Australian businesses run both, and that's fine. They're different tools with different strengths, and we're not here to talk you out of a licence you already own.
When Claude in Microsoft 365 is the wrong call
Honesty is part of the deal. Skip it if:
- You're not on Microsoft 365. If you're a Google Workspace shop, this specific integration isn't your path. Claude still works, just differently.
- Your team already loves another tool and uses it daily. Don't stack a second assistant on top without a reason. Tool fatigue is real and it kills adoption faster than any technical problem.
- You handle sensitive personal or health data. Then you need Enterprise, a proper privacy assessment against the Australian Privacy Principles, and a policy people have actually read.
- Nobody has been trained yet. If your people haven't had a proper session on how to use this, the tool isn't your bottleneck, the knowledge is. Start with Claude training instead.
The bottom line
Claude in Excel, Word and PowerPoint is one of the few AI capabilities that works for an Australian SMB straight out of the box. Excel, Word and PowerPoint are live today. Outlook is beta but genuinely useful. It's all included in the Claude plan you may already be paying for.
What decides whether it creates value isn't the technology. It's whether five to ten people actually use it for two weeks, tell you what worked, and then teach the rest.
