Somebody asks us almost every week whether Claude is better than ChatGPT or just louder right now, and the honest answer depends on the task, although we can give the short version in one table. Is Claude better than ChatGPT? The short answer

Yes, for most European companies whose work is documents, analysis, code and sensitive data, and no, if what you mostly need is images inside the same chat window.

The rest of this post is the reasoning behind the table, which matters more than the table itself once someone on your board asks why.

How do we compare Claude and ChatGPT?

The comparison rests on three kinds of evidence, since a claim that one tool is better means little without saying better at what and measured how.

Vendor benchmarks come first, and they tell a narrow story. Anthropic reports that Opus 5.5 costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, meaning the chunks of text a model reads and writes. That is 20 per cent less than Opus 5, and the model writes more than 30 per cent faster.¹ OpenAI publishes its own numbers for its models, and the top models from both labs now sit so close on published tests that the model rarely decides the choice on its own.

Independent developer surveys come second, because they measure what people keep using rather than what wins a test. The Pragmatic Engineer surveyed 906 engineers in early 2026 and found that 46 per cent named Claude Code their most loved tool, against 19 per cent for Cursor and 9 per cent for GitHub Copilot.² That result covers coding, while general chat tools sit much closer together, so the survey says more about Claude Code than about Claude as a chat window.

What does Claude do better?

Claude keeps long documents together, which shows in daily use more than in any context window figure. A 60-page supplier agreement read by Claude comes back with clause numbers that match the original, which is the test a legal team runs first. Someone still checks the three clauses that carry the liability by hand.

Code is the second area, since Claude Code, meaning Anthropic's agent that reads a codebase, edits files and runs tests, became the tool developers themselves prefer within a year.² We describe how that works for a team in the agentic AI guide to Claude Code.

Data handling is the third, because Anthropic states that inputs and outputs from Claude Team, Enterprise and the API are not used to train its models by default. For Team and Enterprise customers Anthropic acts as the data processor, while your company stays the controller.³ OpenAI makes the same training promise for its business plans, so the difference is smaller than the marketing suggests.⁴

Building your own workflows is the fourth. Skills and open MCP connections, meaning a standard way for Claude to read and write in other systems, let Claude work against your mailbox, spreadsheets or ticket system without anyone writing a full application.

What does ChatGPT do better?

Image generation inside the chat is the clearest ChatGPT win, since a marketing team can write the text and produce the illustration in one conversation, while Claude creates no photos or illustrations at all. A team that ships four social posts a week with images gets there in one tool with ChatGPT and needs two tools with Claude.

The user base is the second advantage, because more colleagues at other companies have already solved the same problem and posted the answer. That helps on a Friday afternoon when nobody in the office knows why a custom GPT stopped reading its files.

What is the difference between Claude Cowork and ChatGPT Work?

Both vendors now sell an agent that finishes whole tasks instead of answering questions, and the two differ mainly in where the files live.

Claude Cowork works in your own folders

Claude Cowork runs in the Claude desktop app, reads, edits and creates files in the folders you connect on your computer, and comes with every paid plan from Pro at $20 a month.⁵ A scheduled Cowork task needs the computer to be awake, so a laptop that sleeps overnight misses its run, which is the first thing new users trip over.

ChatGPT Work runs in the cloud

ChatGPT Work launched on 9 July 2026 and takes a goal, pulls material from the apps you have connected and works for hours before returning a document, spreadsheet or presentation.⁶ It runs in OpenAI's cloud, which suits a team that already lives in Google Workspace or SharePoint, while a team whose files sit on laptops has to move them first.

Where does each vendor store European data?

Data residency, meaning the region where your content is stored, is where many European purchases get decided. Claude Team and Enterprise store data in the US by default, while ChatGPT Business lets the workspace owner pick Europe for content at rest as OpenAI rolls that option out gradually, with abuse-monitoring copies kept in the US.⁷⁸

The European route for Claude runs through Amazon Bedrock, where Claude models are available through an EU cross-region inference profile across regions such as Frankfurt, Ireland, Paris and Stockholm.⁹ That route bills per token and needs a developer to set up, so it fits a document pipeline or customer service agent better than thirty people chatting.

What do our customers pick?

Companies with heavy document work in legal, finance or technical writing almost always land on Claude after a two-week test. The ones that stay with ChatGPT are usually marketing-led teams that publish images every week. A growing group runs both on purpose, with Claude for analysis and ChatGPT for visuals, although that means two admin consoles and two sets of data processing terms to read.

Claude is the better pick for most European companies that work with documents, code and sensitive data. ChatGPT stays the better pick for teams that need images every week, and prices sit level at $20 a seat on both sides.
